Il est d’une importance capitale de s’arrêter à un moment donné et de procéder à l’évaluation de ce qu’on fait. Je soumets à notre réflexion la vision du Plan Stratégique de Relance du Secteur Agricole (PSRSA) du Bénin. Elle est formulée de la façon suivante :

La problématique de développement du secteur agricole met en relief trois défis majeurs portant sur (i) la couverture des besoins alimentaires, (ii) l’accroissement des revenus, et (iii) l’amélioration de l’attractivité de l’activité agricole et du milieu rural. Ces trois défis confèrent au secteur agricole le double rôle d’accélération de la croissance économique et de la contribution à la réduction de la pauvreté, d’où la vision : « Faire du Bénin, une puissance agricole dynamique à l’horizon 2015, compétitive, attractive, respectueuse de l’environnement, créatrice de richesse répondant aux besoins de développement économique et social de la population » (PSRSA, 2010).

L’évaluation que je propose ici est une auto-évaluation de chaque acteur du monde rural du Bénin. Regardons-nous dans le miroir, et de façon individuelle faisons notre propre évaluation…

La VHD, conséquences sur la santé humaine ?

Le virus de la maladie virale hémorragique (VHD) est un virus spécifique aux lapins. Les autres espèces animales ne sont pas menacées par le virus de la VHD. Il en est de même pour l’homme. La VHD ne se transmet pas du lapin à l’homme. La manipulation d’un lapin provenant d’un élevage atteint de la VHD ne pose aucun problème de santé à l’homme.

L’inconvénient d’une telle opération est la propagation du virus. Le virus est très résistant et peut séjourner jusqu’à 12 semaines dans le milieu extérieur.

Néanmoins, en matière de la santé publique, la VHD n’a aucun effet négatif sur la santé humaine. Vous pouvez donc consommer de la viande de lapins en toute sécurité.

ecowasThe Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the 2015 maiden edition of the ECOWAS Fellowship Programme for Masters and PhD (EFP) under the sponsorship of the Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS). The Programme seeks to promote capacity building within the ECOWAS 15-member countries by providing full fellowships for training and education for nationals of ECOWAS member states in higher education institutions of ECOWAS.

Eligibility: The Programme is open to qualified nationals (including graduate students, researchers, lecturers, and staff) of ECOWAS member states who will be admitted for Masters or PhD degree programme at any one of the following three universities:
(a). University of Lagos, Nigeria
(b). University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Une fois encore, je ne vous parlerai pas des lésions d’ordre général. Je vous présente les lésions que j’ai obseErosion de la membrane interne de l'estomacrvées moi-même sur une exploitation cunicole affectée par la VHD.

On aurait pensé en premier lieu à une intoxication alimentaire. On observe un météorisme, un liquide jaunâtre s’écoule de l’urètre lorsqu’on presse l’abdomen. A l’autopsie, on constate une accumulation de gaz dans les caeca (expliquant le météorisme), le foie est décoloré, friable et présente un aspect cuit. Les canaux hépatiques sont fortement irrigués, on constate une hypertrophie de la vésicule biliaire. On note une érosion de la membrane interne de l’estomac et la membrane externe est fortement irriguée. La rate est Membre externe de l'estomac fortement irriguéhypertrophiée, les reins présentent des effusions sanguines.

En dehors de ces lésions à tropisme digestif, nous avons enregistré d’autres lésions hémorragiques. Au niveau des jeunes lapins morts, on observe un épistaxis moins prononcé, la trachée artère est hémorragique et sa membrane interne présente des grumeaux de sang. Les poumons présentent des effusions sanguines. Le cœur est flasque et à l’incision une quantité importante de sang noirâtre s’échappe.

En définitive, j’ai observé deux types de lésions : des lésions hépatiques et des lésions hémorragiques diffuses.Hypertrophie de la vesicule biliaire

J’ai une idée de ce que littérature dit sur les lésions de la VHD. Je dois avouer que la littérature m’a beaucoup aidé à me situer sur ce qui se passait réellement sur l’exploitation. Je choisis de ce fait de ne pas copier simplement les lésions décrites çà et là dans les ouvrages spécialisés ; celles que j’ai présentées ici ont été enregistrées effectivement sur l’exploitation.

Je vous parle ici de ce que j’ai vu moi-même. Il ne s’agit de généralité, ou d’imagination. Pour commencer je dois vous diUn lapin mort de VHDre qu’il est difficile de diagnostiquer la VHD en se basant uniquement sur les symptômes. C’est d’ailleurs le cas de toutes les maladies virales sauf que certaines maladies présentent des symptômes caractéristiques permettant de vite les suspecter.

En ce qui concerne la VHD en considérant ce que j’ai observé, on ne comprenait pas réellement ce qui se passait. Les lapins meurent seulement sans symptômes apparents.

Certains cessent de s’alimenter (anorexie) et le lendemain meurent. D’autres meurent sans aucun symptôme. D’autres encore se débattent dans la cage, sautent, accrochent leurs dents aux mailles de la cage, poussent des cris de détresse et meurent quelques minutes après. Cependant, un symptôme commun est une urine jaunâtre qui mouille le train postérieur du lapin mort. Cela n’a été cUn symptôme de la VHDonstaté qu’après la mort du lapin. J’avais donc hésité à le présenter comme un symptôme, mais plutôt une lésion. Un autre symptôme qui s’est révélé caractéristique, c’est une petite hémorragie du nez observé au niveau des narines du lapin mort.

Ce sont d’abord les lapines mères gestantes qui meurent suivi des lapines mères allaitantes et en dernière position les lapins à l’engraissement.

En résumé, il faut noter comme symptômes l’anorexie, des crises convulsives, écoulement sanguin au bout du nez, et une mortalité de presque 100% des lapins.

LA MALADIE A VIRUS HEMORRAGIQUE DU LAPIN SEVIT AU BENIN

J’avais lu dans les ouvrages spécialisés les informations sur la maladie hémorragique virale du lapin encore connue sous le nom de Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) comme étant une maladie foudroyante des lapins. La littérature m’a Un lapin mort de la VHDrenseigné qu’elle avait même fait ravage au Bénin en 1997. Il y a de cela environ deux semaines, j’avais appris que la maladie serait entrain de faire ravage au nord du Bénin. J’étais pris de frayeur, la première question que je posais était « Existe-il déjà un foyer au sud ? ». On m’informait qu’il n’existe pas encore un foyer au sud et qu’il ne s’agissait que de suspicion.

Malheureusement, je me rends compte qu’il s’agissait en réalité d’un manque d’information. La maladie sévit bel et bien au Sud. Un élevage de 1000 lapines mères totalement décimé, un autre de 50 lapines mères également décimé. Je ne cite plus les petits élevages de 10 ; 20 ; ou 30 lapines mères dont les cheptels sont exterminés durant 7 à 12 jours. L’étude épidémiologique des lapins au Bénin ne présente depuis au moins 2005 aucune maladie virale rencontrée dans les élevages. Les symptômes et les lésions recueillis sur le terrain révèlent en réalité les manifestations de la VHD. Plusieurs éleveurs des départements de l’Ouémé et du Plateau en sont victimes. A cette allure tout le cheptel lapin au Bénin risque d’être décimé.

Mon objectif en rédigeant cet article est de vous apporter l’information. Je ne vous parlerai pas de suspicion car je ne sais pas durant combien de temps nous allons vous parler de suspicion et combien d’élevage en seront ravagés. C’est démoralisant de voir ses lapins bien portant d’une minute à l’autre s’écrouler et mourir devant soi. C’est quelque chose qui ne peut vraiment pas se décrire. Je ne vous souhaite pas de vivre cela.

Que faire maintenant ?

Je vous suggère ce que vous devez faire tout de suite :Des lapins morts de la VHD mis dans une brouette

  • Renforcer les mesures de biosécurité au sein et autour de votre exploitation : éviter toute visite, désinfection systématique de tout le matériel provenant de milieu extérieur à la ferme, pédiluve, rotoluve ….
  • Déstocker votre engraissement ;
  • Réduire l’effectif des lapines en reproduction ;
  • Pour ceux qui veulent investir dans l’élevage de lapin, je vous suggère soit de démarrer avec un effectif assez réduit (si vous voudrez prendre le risque), soit de ne pas le faire du tout en ces moments-ci.

Je dois préciser qu’il existe un vaccin pour éviter la maladie. Malheureusement ce vaccin n’existe pas encore sur le marché béninois…

Depuis 10 ans que je fais ce métier de suivi des fermes d’élevage, je n’ai jamais rencontré une maladie de lapin qui m’a aussi challengé que la VHD. J’ai vu un élevage de plus de 350 lapins littéralement décimé en 12 jours. Le résultat d’un travail minutieux de 8 mois qui s’effondre comme ça en 12 jours. Je ne vous souhaite pas cela !
